BLACK MOUNTAINS CIRCLE LTD

HISTORY

The COURT CUPBOARD is based in an ancient farm building which is at least 500 years old. Originally a Granary and Stable Block, it is almost certainly older than the village 'Courthouse' which stands alongside which was renovated in 1643.
The old Granary was still used as a stable until the 1990s, when the current Court Cupboard gallery was opened by the Black Mountains Circle (BMC) in 1995.

The former Piggery opposite was converted into a modern, fully-equipped training centre in 2001. This wonderful renovation project was awarded a BRONZE MEDAL in the annual Buildings & Works competition at the Royal Welsh Show in 2002.

In 2006 the old milking parlour across the yard was converted into a fully equipped Pottery and glass training workshop with the help of funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and the WDA.

* For those who have a fascination for these things - the prisoners' cell still exists beneath the old Courtroom of the Courthouse next door. But it doesn't get much use these days...!

LOCATION

Situated less than 2 miles from the market town of ABERGAVENNY, the Court Cupboard's rural location looks out on the majestic Black Mountains, which is part of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
With its abundance of wildlife the Court Cupboard garden looks out on to the western slopes of the Skirrid (Ysgyryd Fawr) mountain, which at its highest point has the remains of a small church which was built when Christianity came to Britain, which in turn was built on top of very old Pagan site.
At the Court Cupboard, along with the many varied Arts and Crafts, visitors can enjoy refreshments and locally made cakes by 'Clams' in our comfortable Coffee shop, which is manned daily by different Craftspeople who actually make some of the craft items on display in the galleries.
